They Tested 54 Avocado Oil Products. The Results Are Disturbing

What this video covers

Kane opens by correcting her own past advice: in earlier videos she had told viewers that chips, mayonnaise and salad dressing made with avocado oil were the better choice. She now reports on testing by UC Davis researchers, who she says purchased 54 chip, mayonnaise and salad dressing products that listed avocado oil as the only edible oil ingredient โ€” and found that 48 of the 54 failed authenticity testing. Broken down as she presents it: 93 percent of the avocado oil chips failed, 71 percent of the mayonnaises failed, and 100 percent of the salad dressings failed. She is careful about what “failed” means: the oil extracted from the tested lots was not compositionally consistent with authentic avocado oil, meaning other oils were detected โ€” not necessarily that the products contained no avocado oil at all. For comparison, she says the researchers tested 20 olive oil products and only one failed.

Kane names names in both directions. The products she says failed include Boulder Canyon, Siete (both its kettle-cooked potato chips and maize tortilla chips), Kettle Brand, Jackson’s and Good Health chips, the Sprouts chips labeled 100 percent avocado oil, Primal Kitchen and Chosen Foods dressings, Brianna’s dressing, and mayonnaises from Chosen Foods, Primal Kitchen, Sir Kensington’s and Better Body Foods. Products she says passed both rounds of testing include Grove’s Avonaise mayonnaise and garlic aioli, Graza mayonnaise, Trader Joe’s kettle-cooked, Torres and Graza olive oil chips, and Bellucci, Bragg and California Olive Ranch olive oils. Two products โ€” Lesser Evil’s avocado oil chips and Simply Tostitos tortilla chips โ€” passed one test and failed the second, which Kane reads as evidence of inconsistent oil sourcing from batch to batch. She also draws a distinction between processed foods and bottled oil: a separate 2020 UC Davis study of bottled avocado oils, she says, found Chosen Foods’ bottled oil pure and non-oxidized, and she still buys the bottle while no longer trusting the same brands’ processed lines โ€” which she suggests may source oils through third-party brokers. She notes that PepsiCo acquired Siete in January 2025 and Kraft Heinz acquired Primal Kitchen in 2019, and says she looked for, but found no evidence, that formulas changed after those acquisitions.

Her closing guidance: buy bottled oils that have passed independent testing, or cook with butter, ghee or tallow; make mayonnaise and dressings at home; and treat even the passing premium chips as transition foods rather than health foods, building the diet around foods that carry no label at all.

Key points

  • Kane reports UC Davis researchers bought 54 products listing avocado oil as the only edible oil and found 48 failed authenticity testing: 93 percent of chips, 71 percent of mayonnaises and 100 percent of salad dressings.
  • She defines a failure precisely: the extracted oil was not compositionally consistent with authentic avocado oil, meaning other oils were detected โ€” not that avocado oil was necessarily absent.
  • Products she names as failing include Boulder Canyon, Siete, Kettle Brand, Jackson’s and Sprouts chips; Primal Kitchen, Chosen Foods and Brianna’s dressings; and Chosen Foods, Primal Kitchen, Sir Kensington’s and Better Body Foods mayonnaises.
  • Products she names as passing both test rounds include Grove’s Avonaise mayonnaise, Graza mayonnaise, Trader Joe’s, Torres and Graza olive oil chips, and Bellucci, Bragg and California Olive Ranch olive oils; the same researchers found only 1 of 20 olive oil products failed.
  • She distinguishes bottled oil from processed foods, citing a 2020 UC Davis bottled-oil study in which Chosen Foods’ bottle passed, and says she still buys the bottle.
  • She notes PepsiCo acquired Siete in January 2025 and Kraft Heinz acquired Primal Kitchen in 2019, while saying she found no evidence either acquisition changed a formula.
  • Her advice: cook with tested bottled oils, butter, ghee or tallow; make condiments at home; and treat premium chips as a step up from conventional snacks, not as health food.
