Vinay Prasad on Overall Survival Endpoints in Oncology: recommends

What Prasad says

Dr. Vinay Prasad recommends that cancer-drug regulation prioritize patient-centered outcomes β€” overall survival and quality of life β€” over surrogate measures. In a March 2025 Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology paper, he argues that if regulators prioritized such outcomes, there would be “fewer, but also a higher standard of drugs entering the market.”

His stated reasoning

Prasad says many approved oncology drugs improve only lab values or imaging measures without extending patients’ lives. His stated reasoning is that holding approvals to survival and quality-of-life endpoints would clear out products that offer patients little real benefit while rewarding drugs that genuinely help them live longer or better.
