Vani Hari on synthetic food dyes: warns against

Synthetic food dyes — Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, and Red 3 — are Hari’s signature target. She says they are petroleum-derived, claims children’s consumption has risen 500%, and links them to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children, as well as other harms.

Her stated reasoning is the double standard: she argues that companies like Kraft and Kellogg’s sell versions of the same products abroad without these dyes, which proves to her that the dyes serve marketing rather than food safety. Her campaigns include the 2013 Kraft Mac & Cheese petition (365,000+ signatures, after which Kraft removed Yellow 5/6) and the October 2024 Kellogg’s Battle Creek protest with a 400,000+ signature petition.

Independent scientists, per Reuters, say the evidence linking dyes to the full range of claimed harms is still limited. The dyes are the centerpiece of her HHS partnership — the April 2025 phaseout plan she celebrated — and of her state-level ban advocacy.
