Vani Hari on BHT: warns against

Hari campaigned to get BHT out of Kellogg’s and General Mills cereals (including Rice Krispies and Cinnamon Toast Crunch), noting that the companies don’t use it in the versions they sell abroad. She says BHT is “linked to cancer in some animal studies” and calls it an endocrine disruptor.

Her stated reasoning follows her usual U.S.-versus-abroad comparison: if the same companies can sell cereal without BHT in other countries, she argues, there’s no reason U.S. consumers should get the additive. Both companies announced BHT phase-outs in 2015, though their brand managers said they were already moving in that direction.

BHT remains part of her live Kellogg’s fight: the October 2024 Battle Creek petition demanded removal of both synthetic dyes and BHT from U.S. cereals.
