Vani Hari on state-level additive action: recommends
Hari urges her supporters to back state bills banning artificial dyes and other additives from school food and statewide. Her position, laid out on foodbabe.com, is that state action is what forces national reformulation.
Her stated reasoning is practical: companies can’t efficiently maintain separate recipes for each state, so when a few states pass strict rules, brands reformulate nationally to comply. She credits the state-level groundwork — including West Virginia’s March 2025 ban on all artificial dyes — with building the pressure that led to the federal dye phaseout announced in April 2025.
This is also why she fought the preemption clause in the draft Better Food Disclosure Act: she argues that a weak federal standard overriding state laws would undo the very mechanism that has produced her movement’s wins.
