Vani Hari on reading ingredient labels: recommends
Hari says shoppers should read the full ingredient list and ignore the marketing on the front of the package. Her position, as presented on foodbabe.com, is that front labels “are lying” — that health-sounding claims on the front of a box do not reliably reflect what’s actually inside.
Her stated reasoning is that manufacturers use front-of-package buzzwords (“natural,” “wholesome,” “low-fat”) to sell products whose ingredient lists tell a different story. She argues the only way to know what you’re eating is to turn the package over and read every ingredient. She offers a free “Grocery Shopping System” guide to help followers compare products in-store using this label-first method.
This label-reading practice is the foundation of nearly all of her campaigns: every protest, petition, and boycott she has led began, in her telling, with reading an ingredient list and finding something she opposed.
