Robert Lustig on Health-Halo Products: warns against
Dr. Robert Lustig warns against flavored and sweetened yogurts and other “health halo” products β foods marketed as healthy that, he says, are made ultra-processed by added sugar. His recurring example is strawberry yogurt: he describes it as ultra-processed by virtue of its added sugar, and uses it to illustrate his criticism that the 2026 USDA Dietary Guidelines fail to distinguish it from plain yogurt.
His stated reasoning is that sugar addition overrides whatever nutritional merits a product might otherwise have, which is also why he recommends plain yogurt with live cultures and whole fruit instead (see “Robert Lustig on Fermented Foods: recommends”).
