Robert Lustig on the Sugar Label Rule: recommends
Dr. Robert Lustig offers a label-reading rule of thumb: if sugar appears among the first three ingredients of a packaged food, treat the product as dessert. He also advises avoiding packaged foods with more than three ingredients.
His stated reasoning is that ingredient order reveals how much sugar a manufacturer has added relative to everything else β and, he says, industry has made sugar ubiquitous in products not perceived as sweet. He has promoted the Perfact app (for which he serves as Chief Medical Officer) as a tool for scanning SKUs against one’s biochemical profile while shopping.
