Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on deprescribing psychiatric medications: recommends
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says the United States overuses psychiatric drugs “especially among children” and is shifting the standard of care toward “prevention, transparency and a more holistic approach to mental health,” per Drugs.com/HealthDay’s reporting on his May 4, 2026 action plan.
Kennedy’s stated reasoning is that antidepressants and other psychiatric medications are prescribed too readily, and that tapering plans, informed consent, and monitoring should be standard. Under the plan, SAMHSA is to report on prescribing trends and CMS issued guidance on reimbursing deprescribing care. Kennedy has also made stronger claims — linking psychiatric medications to mass shootings — which medical reporting notes lack evidentiary support. (This page reports Kennedy’s position; it is not medical advice. Anyone on psychiatric medication should consult their clinician before making changes.)
