Mehmet Oz on cracking down on Medicare/Medicaid fraud: recommends

Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends treating fraud enforcement as a central health-funding strategy for CMS. Oz estimates roughly $100 billion per year in fraud, waste, and abuse, and said in a September 2026 Bloomberg “Balance of Power” interview that the more than $20 billion in suspected fraud identified by Treasury “could double the life of the Medicare trust fund.”

Oz’s stated reasoning is that recovered fraud dollars can extend the solvency of the trust fund rather than requiring benefit cuts or new taxes. His mantra on the subject, delivered at the July 2026 Medicaid deferral announcement: “If it smells like fraud, we’re not paying for it anymore.”
