Marty Makary on Reconsidering Low-Fat Dogma: recommends

Dr. Marty Makary argues that the medical establishment wrongly demonized dietary cholesterol and eggs, and that low-fat dietary guidance is associated with obesity and diabetes. He makes the case in Blind Spots (2024), in the chapter “My Uncle Sam Loves Eggs,” and repeated the saturated-fat point at his September 28, 2026 American College of Surgeons lecture.

Makary’s stated reasoning is that the low-fat consensus was a product of institutional inertia rather than solid evidence, and that it steered the public toward diets that worsened the very conditions they were meant to prevent. He holds the episode up as a prime example of medical dogma doing damage.

This is Makary’s position, attributed to him — not medical advice.
