Marty Makary on Radical FDA Transparency: recommends

Dr. Marty Makary recommends making the FDA’s rejection and acceptance letters to drug companies public. He made the case in the Ultimate Human podcast (#229), arguing that transparency is how the agency holds companies accountable and prevents misinformation.

Makary’s stated reasoning is that when the agency’s decisions are visible — including why it says no — the public can judge the science rather than trusting or distrusting blindly. He frames radical transparency as the foundation for rebuilding public trust in the FDA after the COVID era.

He has paired this with his broader view that regulators should communicate honestly about what they know and don’t know, as he told senators at his March 2025 confirmation hearing.
