Marty Makary on Less Medicalized Childbirth: recommends
Dr. Marty Makary argues that many Cesarean sections and routine newbornβmother separations are unnecessary. In Blind Spots (2024), the chapter “A Warm Welcome,” and in his Dad Saves America interview, he recommends skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn and delayed umbilical cord clamping.
Makary’s stated reasoning is that childbirth has been over-medicalized β that the default settings of modern obstetrics favor intervention even when evidence does not require it, and that practices like immediate skin-to-skin contact benefit the baby without adding risk.
This is Makary’s position, attributed to him β not medical advice.
