Marty Makary on Judicious Antibiotic Use: recommends

Dr. Marty Makary recommends judicious antibiotic prescribing to protect the human microbiome. In Blind Spots (2024), the chapter “No Downsides to Antibiotics” argues that antibiotics are overprescribed, and in his Dad Saves America interview he described broad-spectrum prescribing as “carpet-bombing” the microbiome.

Makary’s stated reasoning is that antibiotics, while lifesaving when needed, are given far too freely — for conditions where they do little good — and that the collateral damage to gut bacteria contributes to resistant infections and chronic health problems. He warns that haphazard prescribing has altered a generation’s gut microbiomes and fueled drug-resistant bacteria.

This is Makary’s position, attributed to him — not medical advice.
