Marty Makary on Hormone Replacement Therapy: recommends
Dr. Marty Makary argues that hormone replacement therapy is appropriate and beneficial for suitable menopausal women, and that fear of HRT has been driven by misinterpreted data. He makes the case in Blind Spots (2024), in the chapter “OMG HRT,” and he acted on it as FDA Commissioner: on November 10, 2025, his agency removed black-box warnings from estrogen hormone-therapy products, with Makary saying the FDA was acting to “stop the fear machine steering women away from this life-changing, even lifesaving treatment.”
Makary’s stated reasoning is that the agency’s decision was based on a robust review of the evidence, and that the old warnings caused women to forgo a treatment he describes as life-changing and potentially lifesaving. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists welcomed the label change as an improvement to shared decision-making.
