Marty Makary on Empowering Patients with Honest Information: recommends

At his March 6, 2025 Senate confirmation hearing, Dr. Marty Makary said: “I believe very much in empowering people with information… you can explain to people with humility what we know and what we don’t know, and then they’re going to trust us more.”

Makary’s stated reasoning is that public trust in medicine and regulators is rebuilt through honest, humble communication β€” including admitting uncertainty β€” rather than through paternalistic messaging or censorship. He presents information-sharing as both a moral stance and a practical strategy: informed people, he argues, trust institutions more.

This theme runs through his later work as well, including his warnings against censoring scientific dissent and his advocacy of radical FDA transparency.
