Marty Makary on Early Peanut Introduction: recommends
Dr. Marty Makary argues that introducing peanut exposure early in infancy helps prevent peanut allergies. In Blind Spots (2024), the chapter “The Salem Peanut Trial” makes the case for early peanut exposure, and at his September 28, 2026 American College of Surgeons lecture he cited the American Academy of Pediatrics’ old advice to avoid peanuts until age 3 as an error that contributed to an increase in peanut allergies.
Makary’s stated reasoning is that the medical establishment’s avoidance guidance was a form of dogma unsupported by evidence, and that reversing it — introducing peanuts early rather than late — protects children from developing allergies. He presents this as a case study of how entrenched medical advice can do harm when it is not grounded in data.
As with all health claims on this site, this is Makary’s position, attributed to him — not medical advice.
