Marty Makary on Competition in Healthcare Markets: recommends

Dr. Marty Makary recommends more competition among providers and insurers, and faster biosimilar and generic drug approvals, to bring prices down. At his March 2025 confirmation hearing, he called himself “a big believer that we need to figure out a way to get biosimilars approved quicker.” The Dad Saves America interview outline likewise lists “We need real competition in healthcare” as a core theme.

Makary’s stated reasoning is that consolidated markets and slow approval pathways let incumbents charge inflated prices, while competition — between hospitals, insurers, and drugmakers — is what disciplines prices. Faster biosimilar and generic approvals, in his view, turn regulatory speed into patient savings.

His tenure’s National Priority Voucher program and AI-at-FDA push were presented as extensions of the same logic: make the review system faster so competition can reach patients sooner.
