Marty Makary on Accelerated Psychedelic Research: recommends

As FDA Commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary moved to accelerate psychedelic drug research. In April 2026, his FDA issued new guidance and priority review vouchers for psilocybin aimed at treatment-resistant depression and an MDMA-like compound aimed at PTSD, and approved an early clinical trial for noribogaine. He said the medications “have the potential to address the nation’s mental health crisis,” and he listed the psychedelics guidance among his top accomplishments when he resigned in May 2026.

Makary’s stated reasoning is that the mental health crisis demands new therapeutic options and that the FDA’s review process should not be the bottleneck. Agency officials stressed at the time that the accelerated steps did not mean the drugs were approved or proven safe — only that their reviews would move faster.

This is Makary’s position, attributed to him — not medical advice.
