Mark Hyman on Ultra-Processed Foods: warns against
Ultra-processed foods are Hyman’s central warning. In his September 2024 House testimony, he stated that ultra-processed foods account for about 80% of grocery-store products and 73% of the total food supply, calling poor diet the leading modifiable driver of chronic disease.
His stated reasoning, elaborated in Food Fix (2020) and Food Fix Uncensored (2026), is that the food system is engineered for profit at the expense of public health — that these products are designed to be addictive and that the resulting disease burden is a matter of “policy failures by design” by Big Food, Big Ag, and Big Pharma, not personal willpower. His 2026 book promotion coincided with California ultra-processed-food legislation, which he publicly supported. (All figures and claims are Hyman’s, not independently verified here.)
