Mark Hyman on the Pegan Diet: recommends

Dr. Mark Hyman’s signature dietary framework is the Pegan Diet, first outlined in Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? (2018) and detailed in his full book The Pegan Diet (2021). Hyman says the healthiest eating pattern combines the best of paleo and vegan approaches: roughly 75% plants (mostly non-starchy vegetables), 15–20% high-quality protein, and 5–10% healthy fats.

His one-line rule, as Hyman states it: “If God made it, eat it; if man made it, leave it.” The framework is gluten-free, limits legumes, and excludes conventional dairy — all positions Hyman extends across his other recommendations. His stated reasoning is that both paleo and vegan camps have valid points but each has blind spots, and that the common ground — whole, unprocessed, nutrient-dense food — is what he says the evidence supports. (All of this is Hyman’s position, not this site’s medical advice.)
