Jay Bhattacharya on standardizing organoid models: recommends
Bhattacharya recommends standardizing organoid models — and launched an $87 million Standardized Organoid Modeling (SOM) Center at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research to do it. In the September 2026 announcement, as covered by PharmaBiz and Applied Radiology, he said standardized, reproducible, accessible organoid protocols will “accelerate drug discovery and translational science.” His stated reasoning is that organoid models can only replace animal models and win regulators’ acceptance if labs across the field are working from the same reproducible protocols, with models accessible enough to become shared scientific infrastructure rather than one-lab curiosities.
