Jay Bhattacharya on geographic equity in NIH funding: recommends

At the February 3, 2026 Senate HELP hearing, Bhattacharya told Sen. Jim Banks that working with Congress for more geographic equity in grant distribution is one of his goals, according to an Indiana University federal update published February 5, 2026. His stated reasoning responds to concentration in the existing system: Banks contrasted Indiana’s roughly $350 million in NIH funding with Massachusetts’ roughly $3 billion. Bhattacharya presented spreading funding more evenly across states as a matter of fairness and of building research capacity beyond the established coastal hubs.
