Gary Taubes on ketogenic and low-carb diets as clinical therapy: recommends

Gary Taubes says that for a large percentage of people with obesity, type 2 diabetes, or insulin resistance, carbohydrate restriction “may not be simply one diet among many. It may be the dietary approach that finally makes long-term success possible.” He presents this as a legitimate clinical therapy rather than a fad diet.

His stated reasoning: in The Case for Keto, Taubes says he interviewed 120 physicians who use low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diets in practice, and he treats the clinical experience of those physicians — and the patient results they report — as meaningful evidence for the approach. He has also discussed this argument ahead of his August 2026 appearance at the Symposium for Metabolic Health, where he considered delivering a talk making the clinical case for ketogenic diets.
