Calley Means's Full-Time HHS Senior Advisor Role

Advancing

Calley Means began his government service in early 2025 as a special government employee (SGE) — a classification capped at 130 workdays per year — and was later hired full-time and listed as a senior adviser in HHS’s internal directory. HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon confirmed the full-time hire to the New York Times, saying Means “will focus primarily on food and nutrition policy.”

In the role, Means has coordinated several flagship MAHA projects, including the children’s-health report from the Make America Healthy Again Commission and the overhaul of the federal dietary guidelines. The appointment put one of the movement’s highest-profile public figures inside the department with direct responsibility for the food-policy agenda he had spent years advocating from outside.

The hire has drawn scrutiny as well as support. Critics have raised questions about Means’s concurrent business interests in Truemed, a wellness-payments company he co-founded, and his role in policies that could affect health-spending rules — a controversy documented separately. The White House has said he complies with ethics requirements.
